Knowing the difference between the bollards is very important to avoid unnecessary costs. Since security bollards are used for various purposes and for many applications, they are often designed in many ways and features that you have to be aware when selecting. The following features and types are worth considering:
Fixed Bollards (Passive)
These are permanently positioned and cannot be moved from one place to another, as their name suggests.
Movable Bollards (Active)
Security bollards that specifically designed to be removed to give temporary access to authorized vehicles like in delivery station entrances.
According to the size of movable bollards, it can be totally removed by hand from the ground embedded sleeve, automatically retracted underground by push button or semi automatically retracted underground by hand drill machine.
Surface Base Plate Mounted Bollards
These bollards, sometimes called bolt down bollards, are fixed to the a hard surface using a base plate. Minimum crash rating can be achieved in this case.
Underground Base Plate Mounted Bollards
These bollards are bolt down bollards but the base plate is fixed to underground footing.
Deep Embedded Bollards
The bollard (if permanent type) or the socket of the bollard (if movable) is buried underground in concrete, re-bars can be used to increase the crash rating level.
Shallow Mounted Bollards
To minimize the excavation depth in areas where deep foundation is not possible or not allowed, a shallow steel foundation (a flat hard surface) can be used.
Bollard Cover Design
Bollards may serve as architectural fixtures. they are used to enhance the elegance of the surroundings. Bollard covers may come as customized design with unusual shapes to attract the visitor’s attention. The following are common and usual designs.
Bollard cover Shapes and cap design
Bollard Covers could be any shape and style but the common are round and square shapes. Bollard caps also comes with endless designs but the common cap mostly used are flat, dome, semi dome or 45 degree caps.
Bollard Cover Finishing
Stainless Steel (304 or 316), Aluminium, PVC, Coated or painted with a corrosion resistant layer.
Bollard Cover Accessories
To enhance the visibility of the bollard cover, some accessories and features maybe added like LED light, reflective tape and logo.
Bollard Base Plate Cover Design
It has many other names like the base collar, the bollard skirt or flange cover. It is essential for the collar to have the same finish of the bollard cover to look like as one piece.
Bollard Cover size
The diameter or width or of the bollard cover is limited to central bollard size (round or square), a proper space between the bollard and the cover should be maintained for easy insertion. The size of both the bollard and the cover is limited to the standard sizes of the Steel pipes available in the market. Height can be customized without limit, unless used as a security bollard, where the height of the main bollard should not be less than the certified in the crash rating design.
Central Bollard Crash Rating Level
K4, K8 and K12 are the first and very well-known crash rating system for vehicle security bollards and every new crash rating system created always refers to K-rating.
