824.1 Vehicle classes & schedules
Define HGV/LGV windows and controls (223, 525). Schedules stabilise HVM bollard operations.
Start with the vehicle classes expected (e.g., rigid 18-tonners, tractor–trailers, delivery vans). Align delivery windows with the selected modes of operation to avoid unnecessary cycling of automatic lanes and to reduce queue pressure. Where night operations apply, add a short “quiet mode” with lowered throughput and pre-briefed escorts to control risk and noise.
Choose passive (fixed/removable) arrays for predictable windows and lower duty, and automatic lanes where frequent legitimate access and emergency override are needed. Confirm the energy budget and Ops/hour targets match the delivery timetable.

824.2 Turning & staging
Stage off live roads; confirm swept paths (325). Keep crash rated bollard gaps intact.
Service yards work best when vehicles can queue and reverse inside a protected envelope, not on the live road. Use the turning & service access checks to verify swept paths, turning radius and reversing arcs. Keep the clear-gap rules intact; never “borrow” space at corners or dock throats.
Provide a marked holding pen and a visible hold line before the keepered opening so drivers can receive instructions without blocking movements. Where geometry is tight, consider a short corner chicane that protects pedestrians and discourages high-energy run-ups.
824.3 Keepered access
Dimensions, plates, and markings (325, 357). No snag points at HVM bollard heads.
For keepered openings, set the opening width to the target vehicle envelope plus a tolerance for reversing variance. Add durable dock-grade markings and edge plates so drivers judge alignment at low speed and in poor lighting. Bollard heads should not protrude or create snag points.
Where access changes frequently (e.g., waste collection vs. goods in), combine a narrow removable (lift-out) bay with an adjacent automatic lane set. This keeps the permanent defend line intact while allowing controlled exceptional moves (escort or temporary event mode).
824.4 Worker safety
Ped routes, beacons, reversing alarms (353, 345). Safety complements crash rated bollard function.
Crash-rated bollards handle impact energy; worker safety relies on clearly separated pedestrian desire lines, conspicuous signals, and field devices. Use beacons with night auto-dimming, audible beacons, and reversing alarms with A-weighted limits to prevent nuisance in quiet hours. Lay out refuge pockets and marshal lines where staff guide manoeuvres.
Add a short “reset-to-normal” checklist at each lane and keep safety edges or photo-eyes aligned and verified during routine inspections. Document human-in-the-loop steps in the operator workflow so bollard operations and banksman signals don’t conflict.
824.5 Collision protection
Low-speed guards for docks complement HVM bollards (434). Avoid false equivalence with ratings (414).
Loading docks need two layers: low-speed collision guards (bumpers, rub-rails, wheel guides) to protect bay edges and furniture, and a separate HVM array to stop hostile vehicles. Do not assume a low-speed device’s toughness equals a certified crash rating—they solve different problems.
At corner-bay hotspots and door protection, apply the door protection array rules and keep capture height effective for the vehicle class envelope. If you expect glancing impacts from trailers, raise guards and reinforce corners without impinging on the bollard clear-gap.
824.6 Utilities conflicts
Ducts, drains, fuel lines (241–246). Choose shallow options where needed (244, 332).
Service yards are often dense with ducts, interceptors, and legacy fuel lines. Before fixing array positions, complete utility searches and detection (241, 242) and map conflict bands and no-go envelopes (243). Where clashes persist, evaluate shallow foundations with documented footing equivalence and drainage paths.
Verify loads and soil conditions (331, 332) and reserve service clearances for panels and pits. Add draw-pits and long-sweep bends for maintainable cabling, and confirm sump positions don’t reduce footing bearing area.
824.7 Spill & silt control
Traps, interceptors, cleanup (245, 726). Protect crash rated bollard equipment.
Plan for routine silt capture and occasional oil spills around keepers, HPUs, and cable pits. Follow the drainage strategy (245): use silt baskets, gully traps, and interceptors sized to yard gradients. Keep weep paths clear so chambers don’t flood and compromise enclosures or reduce electrical clearances.
Document environmental controls in the site’s Environmental Controls (726): spill kits, disposal notes, and a short clean-up drill for staff. Protect enclosures with breather drains and raised cable glands; avoid standing water at covers.
824.8 Access control
ANPR, PINs, escort rules (534). Interlocks remain primary (352).
At loading gates, convenience credentials (ANPR, PIN pads) help throughput, but the interlock matrix stays authoritative. Set explicit escort rules for unusual vehicles and enforce latched access states after alarms. Coordinate cameras and readers in the Access Control/CCTV plan so the driver cone and plate angles are reliable.
For UAE projects, align with SIRA requirements for audit trails and reader placement; add a short note in the submittals and link to SIRA Bollards (UAE) for authority context.
824.9 SAT & handover
Demonstrate drills and signage (638, 736). Evidence closes HVM bollard approvals.
Close out with a witnessed SAT that proves interlocks, signage, and safe local mode—including reversing/escort drills and quiet-hour operations. Capture a video set of normal, degraded, and EFO sequences and retain it in the handover pack index.
Provide a preventive maintenance plan (734) sized to lane duty, with checks for gap drift, beacons, alarms, and sump cleaning. Train operators with micro-drills and sign-off sheets, then set review dates for seasonal adjustments and any authority re-inspection.
