Build responsibly and keep approvals. Control noise/dust near occupied spaces (546), prevent spills from HPUs/oils (512), segregate waste, and protect groundwater at pits/sumps (616, 334). Add hot-weather measures (337) and safe public interfaces during reinstatement (629). Log incidents promptly (727) and retain compliance evidence (716) that dovetails with ITP lines (714) and final approvals (717, 739). This construction-phase page sits under this section and the broader chapter hub. Where UAE approvals apply, see SIRA Bollards (UAE). For works that affect surfaces or access, you may also find What to Expect and the Installation Guide helpful.
726.1 Dust suppression
Watering, sheeting, cutting controls. Dust control sustains HVM bollard acceptance.
Plan dust at source: damp down during saw-cutting and breaking; use on-tool extraction; sheet/cover stockpiles; wheel-wash on exits. Specify triggers (wind speed, workface type) and competent use of cutting tools. Close to entrances, maintain a clean route so the site does not track fines onto public roads.
Define “stop-work” thresholds and alternative methods (e.g., pre-cut off-site). Keep consumables (filters, water bowsers) in the look-ahead. Record locations needing added care (near doors, air intakes, hospitals, schools) in the MS/RA and cross-reference the surface reinstatement interfaces (629).
| Aspect | What matters | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Watering + extraction at source | MS Format |
| Evidence | Daily photos, wind notes | Evidence standards |
| Interfaces | Public edges, doorways | Frontage protection |
726.2 Noise & vibration
Quiet hours, barriers, monitoring (546). Controls protect crash rated bollard approvals.
Agree quiet hours and tasks allowed in each period. For persistent sources (e.g., coring, compactors, powered saws), add acoustic screens; target dBA limits based on context and show HPU enclosure acoustic limits (546) in your method.
Control vibration near sensitive glazing, equipment rooms, or heritage curtilage: sequence heavy works earlier, use lower-impact tools, and monitor when required. Notify neighbours ahead of time and provide a contact for concerns. Where approvals are active, note the control plan in the submittal cover and direct reviewers to the MS/RA section.
726.3 Water & silt
Sumps, filters, clean discharge (245, 614). Measures shield HVM bollard pits.
Keep excavations and drainage sumps free from silt. Use silt socks, inlet baskets, and staged settlement before discharge. Never pump silty water to storm without filtration. In high water-table sites, coordinate with dewatering (614) and the drainage strategy (245).
Protect new pits for HPUs/control panels with temporary covers and perimeter bunds. Plan for rain events (freeboard, pumps on standby) and check downstream outfalls. Where required, record turbidity readings and keep the log with the daily site diary.
726.4 Spill prevention
Bunded storage, spill kits, training. Prevention avoids crash rated bollard contamination.
Store fuels and hydraulic oils in bunded areas sized to 110% of the largest container. Issue a spill kit near each risk point (fuel store, HPU, refuelling) and brief operatives on first response and escalation. For automatic systems, the HPU method should include hose handling, bleed-down, and drip trays.
Define reporting: stop source, contain with absorbent, notify supervisor, photograph, bag/waste as hazardous, and log in the incident register (727). For approvals, reference the spill plan in authority submittals (717) and keep disposal tickets with the handover pack (736, 739).
726.5 Waste segregation
Skips, permits, licensed carriers (218). Segregation keeps HVM bollard sites tidy.
Provide labelled skips (inert, scrap metal, timber, mixed, hazardous) and site them on firm ground away from the public interface. Keep a tidy route to avoid collision risk with plant. For contaminated absorbents and oily rags, use sealed drums and a licensed carrier; retain waste transfer notes in the handover pack index (736).
Schedule regular walk-downs to prevent over-filling and windblown litter. Where streetscape sensitivities are high, add mesh lids or covers and increase pick-ups during peak works.
726.6 Air & heat
Shade, hydration, rest cycles (337). Welfare sustains crash rated bollard productivity.
Plan for hot-climate stress: shaded break areas, chilled water, electrolyte options, and task rotation. Use a simple work-rest regime tied to forecast temperature and humidity, with early starts for heavy works. Keep first-aid trained staff aware of heat exhaustion signs and make PPE choices heat-appropriate without compromising safety devices & measures.
Protect materials/equipment: shade resin/sticky products, store coatings per DFT specs, and avoid placing enclosures & cabling in direct sun before install. Coordinate with hot climate design (337) for any temporary substitutions.
726.7 Wildlife & trees
Root protection, nesting checks. Care maintains HVM bollard goodwill.
Mark exclusion zones for trees and install ground protection where access runs near root zones. Avoid cutting during nesting seasons without checks. Keep lighting and generators oriented away from sensitive habitats. Reinstate quickly and remove temporary fences/markers once safe.
726.8 Monitoring & logs
Daily readings and photos (716). Logs prove crash rated bollard compliance.
Use a simple matrix to capture dust/noise readings, weather notes, water clarity/turbidity, and spill/waste actions. Attach a geo-tagged photo set to each entry and store files per the file index & naming rules (911) and evidence standards (716).
Map log items to ITP lines (714) so inspectors can verify quickly. Where SIRA or other authorities are in scope, mirror the log headings they expect and reference the location of evidence in the submission index (917/938).
726.9 Complaints handling
Record, respond, mitigate. Handling protects HVM bollard reputation.
Set a single publicly posted contact. When a complaint arrives, record time/date, location, nature (dust, noise, access), immediate action, and follow-up. Offer mitigation (adjust hours, add screens, improve cleaning) and confirm in writing. Close with a short note to the client and file under the daily diary (729) and incident register (727).
